Invitation to Poetry: Give Me a Word 2013

Welcome to the Abbey’s 64th Poetry Party!

We are making a little departure this month from our usual format where I select an image for you to illuminate with your words.

This month the invitation is to write a poem inspired by your word for the year (and even though that drawing is over, you are still welcome to post your word there – and if you already shared a poem there, please share it again here to have them all gathered together).

I will suggest you make it an acrostic poem which is where each letter of your word forms the first letter of a line of your poem, but all poetic forms are most welcome here.  Consider writing a blessing for the year ahead inspired by your word.

Scroll down and add it in the comments section below to share it with the Abbey community. Feel free to take your poem in any direction and then post the invitation on your blog (if you have one), Facebook, or Twitter, and encourage others to come join the party!

On Friday, February 1st I will draw a name at random to win a space in the upcoming online Lenten retreat with St. Hildegard of Bingen.

  1. GENTLENESS

Go softly through each day and night
Even when troubles dim the light
No need to fret and worry so
Trust all will be well as though
Love will show the face of God
Eyes so bright, eyes that nod
Now seize the moment that roils
Ever ready to still our souls
Sooth our minds, our hearts, our all
So quietly we rest on new tilled soil

Maybe a bit late this year.

  2. UTTER

Understand what is happening in the present moment

    Think about a gracious response

Talk, speak up, speak out, words too long silent

    Evaluate the impact

    Receive what is given

  3. P – Prevent me from sliding off the course
    slipping not anchored
U – unable to keep my feet on the pathway of stillness

    R – Run to me Lord –

S – Scoop me up – carry me to safety where

U – Unstoppable communion and quiet – fill – overflowing full of light

    E – Ever increasing grace

  6. My word is “obedience,” which I have been struggling with (in more ways than one):

Open my ears so I may listen
Before taking that next best step,
Easing my way into holy presence,
    Dancing toward and with Divinity.
I long to have Your guidance now,
    Encouraging my faith with Yours,
    Never wavering but always seeking
Counsel from the Heart of my heart,
Enriching each precious moment of life.

  7. Presence awareness

    Promise that comes through stillness
    Restores life a new
    Elevated into delight
    sensing
    Elation
    Now to begin
    concentrate
    Everlasting

    Arriving somewhere new
    Wonder to behold
    Allow the flow
    Rivers of life streams in
    Everything
    Nuances
    Essence
    Settling
    Solidify ..solid…still.

  8. Awareness

    Always
    Wondering
    About
    Righteous
    Enlightenment
    Notice!!!!!!!
    Expect!!!!!!!
    Subtle
    Surprises

  9. Oases of Rest

    Only you Lord, know me
All that I am and can be
    Sabbath rest you ordain
    Entering your peaceful domain
Stillness that calms and heals me.

I learnt much about my word OASES and what I am called to do this year when I struggled to write the poem. Thank you for mini retreat it was a real blessing.
