Dear monks, artists, and pilgrims,
In ancient times, wise men and women fled out into the desert to find a place where they could be fully present to the divine and to their own inner struggles at work within them. The desert became a place to enter into the refiner’s fire and be stripped down to one’s holy essence. The desert was a threshold place where you emerged different than when you entered.
Many people followed these ammas and abbas, seeking their wisdom and guidance for a meaningful life. One tradition was to ask for a word – this word or phrase would be something on which to ponder for many days, weeks, months, sometimes a whole lifetime. This practice is connected to lectio divina, where we approach the sacred texts with the same request – “give me a word” we ask – something to nourish me, challenge me, a word I can wrestle with and grow into. The word which chooses us has the potential to transform us.
What is your word for the year ahead? A word which contains within it a seed of invitation to cross a new threshold in your life?

Greetings friends,
My word for the year arrived in a flash. It is Impression.
I am overwhelmed by the implications.
Let us begin
♥️
My word this year is calm. Knowing that God handles all and I will be calm in his presence always.
“Flow” came to me this year. I sense a year with more heart-centered ease and less thinking ahead.
Connie LoPresti: My word is assurance. I will lean into this word with an open mind and heart this year as I read scripture, pray and sing praises! Letting the Spirit change and direct me.
My word for 2024 is ‘Re-kindle.’ Seems like life got a little dull last year and I want to re-ignite my enthusiasm and creativity.
My word is PULSE. I look forward to discovering what this word will bring in the coming year. I would like to begin with no expectations.

I am invited in 2024 to RISK! It is time to move out of my comfort zones and follow my heart and gut. RISK is my word for 2024.
After a lifetime of feeling the opposite, my word this year is “Worthy.” Worthy of joy, worthy of boundaries, worthy of love, of self-care, of pursuing my dreams, of rest, of simply being here.
My word is SELF. After a year at an interim position requiring all my attention to be focused on others, I believe it is now time to focus on self-love and care. Feeding and tending of my soul child.
