Program Description

This retreat is part of our 10-month series The Mystical Heart: Love as a Creative Force.

If African Indigenous thought is correct that our purpose lies in our communities, then what is uniquely ours to do today?

This retreat will share with you some aspects of African Indigenous Mysticism as they relate to “Public Mysticism” coined by Author, Theologian, and Lawyer, Barbara Holmes, and the spirituality of Harriet Tubman, conductor on the Underground Railroad, Womanist, Civil War Freedom Fighter and Healer, and “the Moses of her people.”

During our 3-hour retreat, we will learn some of the history around Tubman and the Underground Railroad, share her internalized freedom, and challenge ourselves to find our own internalized freedom and call to community.

We will do this using “Harriet’s Apothecary,” which will engage afro-futurism, story, music, poetry, sharing, writing, silence, and song to find the genuine within ourselves and our authentic call to be of use to our communities as part of being human.

There is a popular meme that reads, “I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if they had known that they were slaves.” This quote is attributed to Harriet Tubman, but it was coined in the 1980s by an unknown creator. Nevertheless, it has stuck to Harriet because her specific feats and their outcomes are not completely known. These acts where clandestine in nature. Harriet’s influence continues today, even in this retreat, as we use her courage, faith, and mysticism to find our interior freedom in this current age of wars and rumors of wars, pandemic, racism, poverty, domination, unhealthy institution, and climate change.

The retreat will be recorded for those who register and made available within 48-72 hours of the program. We will send a notification when it is ready for viewing.
