Give Me a Word 2015: 6th Annual Abbey Giveaway (Free gifts & prizes too!)

Share your Word for 2015

In ancient times, wise men and women fled out into the desert to find a place where they could be fully present to God and to their own inner struggles at work within them. The desert became a place to enter into the refiner’s fire and be stripped down to one’s holy essence. The desert was a threshold place where you emerged different than when you entered.

Many people followed these ammas and abbas, seeking their wisdom and guidance for a meaningful life. One tradition was to ask for a word –  this word or phrase would be something on which to ponder for many days, weeks, months, sometimes a whole lifetime. This practice is connected to lectio divina, where we approach the sacred texts with the same request – “give me a word” we ask – something to nourish me, challenge me, a word I can wrestle with and grow into.  The word which chooses us has the potential to transform us.

  • What is your word for the year ahead? A word which contains within it a seed of invitation to cross a new threshold in your life?

Share your word in the comments section below by Tuesday, January 6, 2015 and you are automatically entered for the prize drawing (prizes listed below).

  1. Threshold.
the unknown is so present in the daily realities of my life and as I open my mind beyond the uncertainties I sense possibilities of a refreshing new . I am amidst this journey and in the threshold landscape. I pray to be receptive to tread lightly to allow and to support this fertile landscape.

  2. Freedom. It still is my word … since 2008. Yesterday, I decided to join the Abbey for this ‘give me a word’ retreat. When I arrived home from work, I was struck by the title of the book lying on my center table, ‘instinct for freedom.’ As if, it was the first time I saw the word ‘freedom’ in my whole life. I been associating it with me for the past six years but last night I felt like I didn’t know its meaning. I have to google the meaning of the word ….

  3. CAPABLE chose me. 2 Tim 3:16-17 Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for righteousness, that the person dedicated to God may be equipped and CAPABLE for every good work. (NET)

  4. REST.
I was in the middle of a yoga class being asked for my intention for the new year rather than a resolution. Resting is something I find quite difficult to do; feeling the pressure to do, produce and accomplish. It is a call to REST that I feel my mind, body and spirit are craving.

  5. My word is HEALING. I recently left a job doing what I loved (hospice work) but the office/workplace itself had become toxic. I have been exhausted in many ways but know that I am on the right track now to heal.

  6. My word, CREATE, came just yesterday as I was waiting on God. For a long while I have been struggling to find time, space and courage to follow His instructions to use the creativity He has given me. I have also been plagued by health problems in the last few months so I am praying that His power, healing and inspiration will enable me to CREATE in 2015.

  7. Breathe. Each deliberate breath is a prayer to become more mindful, contemplative, prayerful, peace-giving. Perhaps one way to practice this discipline is by writing BREATHE at the top of each day in my journal… and see where it leads. Breath of Heaven, breathe through me.

  8. Present, take time to be present with God, myself, children, husband, nature. Am I still? Am I listening?

  9. ENJOY is the word that wins and is calling me in 2015 that I may redeem the time.

Cant decide between HOPE or ENJOY last few days…
HOPE is to not give up and continue to grow in midst of significant family relationship failures and distance, yet to also
ENJOY what God has given … to Enjoy Every BREATH , to enjoy being with Father God/Jesus/ Holy Spirit who dwells within and without
