Give Me a Word 2023

In ancient times, wise men and women fled out into the desert to find a place where they could be fully present to the divine and to their own inner struggles at work within them. The desert became a place to enter into the refiner’s fire and be stripped down to one’s holy essence. The desert was a threshold place where you emerged different than when you entered.

Many people followed these ammas and abbas, seeking their wisdom and guidance for a meaningful life. One tradition was to ask for a word – this word or phrase would be something on which to ponder for many days, weeks, months, sometimes a whole lifetime. This practice is connected to lectio divina, where we approach the sacred texts with the same request – “give me a word” we ask – something to nourish me, challenge me, a word I can wrestle with and grow into. The word which chooses us has the potential to transform us.

What is your word for the year ahead? A word which contains within it a seed of invitation to cross a new threshold in your life?

Share your word in the comments section below by January 5, 2023 and you are automatically entered for the prize drawing (prizes listed below).

  1. My word is SAVOR.

Savor the richness of the moment … what is seen, heard, tasted, felt and smelled. Savor beauty along the path. A call to mindfulness and wonder…

  2. Friendship
    With self and others
Reflecting the manifesto’s rule of hospitality
Welcoming to ALL within and without

  3. My word for 2023 is labyrinth…Growing into
calmness and peace that trusts that the journey will lead to the Center…

  4. This morning the shimmering invitational phrase I received was:

    “Come home to yourself”.

This encourages me to fully savour the process I’m currently engaged in (an intentional process Developmental Spiritual Direction called “The Pathway Home”. I’ve been in it for over a year (takes around 18 months). Im also a facilitator of this process for others. This New year coincides with me reaching the “adult stage” nearing the culmination, I had begun to feel weary with the process but now I feel full of expectant hope about the gifts to be gathered, harvested and integrated this new season.

  5. Return…I have been chosen by this word to return. I ponder it as a call to return to something in the past or present or even future. Many thoughts come to mind such as return to Me, return to deep prayer, return to my childhood and so much more. I am excited to have been chosen by “return” and will see where it leads me throughout this coming year.
