Give Me a Word 2015: 6th Annual Abbey Giveaway (Free gifts & prizes too!)

Share your Word for 2015

In ancient times, wise men and women fled out into the desert to find a place where they could be fully present to God and to their own inner struggles at work within them. The desert became a place to enter into the refiner’s fire and be stripped down to one’s holy essence. The desert was a threshold place where you emerged different than when you entered.

Many people followed these ammas and abbas, seeking their wisdom and guidance for a meaningful life. One tradition was to ask for a word –  this word or phrase would be something on which to ponder for many days, weeks, months, sometimes a whole lifetime. This practice is connected to lectio divina, where we approach the sacred texts with the same request – “give me a word” we ask – something to nourish me, challenge me, a word I can wrestle with and grow into.  The word which chooses us has the potential to transform us.

  • What is your word for the year ahead? A word which contains within it a seed of invitation to cross a new threshold in your life?

Share your word in the comments section below by Tuesday, January 6, 2015 and you are automatically entered for the prize drawing (prizes listed below).

  1. CHAOS

“You need chaos in your soul to give birth to a dancing star.” Nietzsche

    Welcoming in chaos in 2015!

  2. PAUSE

Not what I expected. This word definitely chose me. I’m excited at the invitation and reminder to pause between breaths, between activities, before speaking, before going to sleep at night.

  3. My word is PERSPECTIVE.
It found me while I was picking raspberries – sometimes you have to look for the ripe fruit from a different direction – I get continual surprises at what I have missed, what is so obvious from a different perspective. In 2015 I am called to look at life situations from a variety of perspectives – life is new every day.

  4. My word is embrace. I am starting the new year in a new state with a new job which involves some nervousness. However, I intend to embrace all the new adventures this change brings.

  5. Sing

As in “How can I keep from singing?” And “Sing a new song unto the Lord.” This year will call forth new songs, in liturgy, in thanksgiving and grief as I turn 65.

Thank you for the 12-day process, Christine, and for nailing the Matt passage for Epiohany. Great work! With love from Deb and me in VT.

  6. The word that chose me this year was Benevolent. I don’t know what wisdom or movement it has in store but my heart is ready to journey and explore.

  7. My word is: shout.
I spend way too much time internally. Shout feels over the top but I feel like I have to start there to begin to understand how to pull myself away from being so shy.
