Give Me a Word 2015: 6th Annual Abbey Giveaway (Free gifts & prizes too!)

Share your Word for 2015

In ancient times, wise men and women fled out into the desert to find a place where they could be fully present to God and to their own inner struggles at work within them. The desert became a place to enter into the refiner’s fire and be stripped down to one’s holy essence. The desert was a threshold place where you emerged different than when you entered.

Many people followed these ammas and abbas, seeking their wisdom and guidance for a meaningful life. One tradition was to ask for a word –  this word or phrase would be something on which to ponder for many days, weeks, months, sometimes a whole lifetime. This practice is connected to lectio divina, where we approach the sacred texts with the same request – “give me a word” we ask – something to nourish me, challenge me, a word I can wrestle with and grow into.  The word which chooses us has the potential to transform us.

  • What is your word for the year ahead? A word which contains within it a seed of invitation to cross a new threshold in your life?

Share your word in the comments section below by Tuesday, January 6, 2015 and you are automatically entered for the prize drawing (prizes listed below).

  1. PEARL is what arrives on my palette (palate!)…along with a quote from Federico Fellini: “All art is autobiographical. The pearl is the oyster’s autobiography.” For 2015 and beyond, let us know each individual scripts the Story. Blessings…and lustrous, beautiful pearls to all spinners of cosmic sand.

  2. Fire. So many people have said, “Oh, I wish I had your fire!” It’s not so easy being the one on fire, so this year I’m looking at the fire verses in Exodus – the bush that was not consumed, the fire atop Sinai, the pillar of fire – and also the mystical verses in the prophets – the coal on Isaiah’s lips, the merkavah, the refiner’s fire – and more.

  3. Persevere…….keep doing what I’m doing in faith, to be open and aware to what God places in front of me. To continue being inspired in my artwork and daily life. To continue to deepen my walk with Him through silence, nature, beauty, and soul mates. To maintain an attitude of gratitude for graces undeserved, family, friends and abundant blessings. For avenues that help me grow spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.

  4. The word that kept coming up for me is “shimmer.” This word was repeated in so many of the emails from the retreat. And it is so similar to another word I have used in past retreats, “simmer” where I would allow things to just work their own way out rather than trying to be in control. This notion of shimmering feels like a way to step back and just see how things will appear and shine for me in the coming year. It also reminds me of the ocean, where I live, and the river I cross on the way to work, where I can often observe the light shimmering on the surface while realizing there is depth and activity underneath. Hmmm, lots of metaphors are presenting themselves.

  5. My word is LISTEN, as I don’t stop often enough to hear– the feelings beyond the words, the emotions that fall so quietly, the sounds surrounding us each day. More profoundly is my desire to listen to God within and to let that voice above all else, guide my footsteps and my heart.

  6. LISTEN is my word for 2015. Taking the time, and learning how, to listen to my body, to my intuition, to my muse.

  7. My word from 2014 carries forward! I’m not done with it yet!
I enjoyed the exercise last year and found Spirit expanding.
So here’s my word, very Celtic: Peregrinatio, to be on pilgrimage
    And my symbol: the coracle
    And my patron saint: Brendan

This is a great exercise. If you didn’t do it last year, try this!
