Share your Word for 2013
In ancient times, wise men and women fled out into the desert to find a place where they could be fully present to God and to their own inner struggles at work within them. The desert became a place to enter into the refiner’s fire and be stripped down to one’s holy essence. The desert was a threshold place where you emerged different than when you entered.
Many people followed these ammas and abbas, seeking their wisdom and guidance for a meaningful life. One tradition was to ask for a word – this word or phrase would be something on which to ponder for many days, weeks, months, sometimes a whole lifetime. This practice is connected to lectio divina, where we approach the sacred texts with the same request – “give me a word” we ask – something to nourish me, challenge me, a word I can wrestle with and grow into. The word which chooses us has the potential to transform us.
- What is your word for the year ahead? A word which contains within it a seed of invitation to cross a new threshold in your life?

Enough….
I am enough just as I am – doing just what I am doing. What anyone thinks of my choices is none of my business.
My words for 2013 are— “let go”— Let go of hurt feelings, anger, and regret. Let go of the past…and live each day as it comes with gratitude for all the blessings God gives me.
The ‘finding’ of a word is a familiar – although not an annual – process for me. Likewise, as many of you have expressed, it is not me finding the word – but rather – the word finding me.
I love word art and praying with illuminations. I often find inspiration from visio divina and from artists like Mary Anne Radmacher. Several months ago, “Ask” found me. It was certainly delivered by Kelly Rae Roberts’ artwork, but had purchased the piece called “Breathe” because the first word resonated with me.
Over the past couple weeks, I’ve come back to the website several times (only today finally reading the words of others) and I’ve been reminded each time of “Ask.”
As the past several months have been very challenging, both mentally and physically, “Ask for what is needed” is quite appropriate and I will endeavor to do so in the coming year.
Thank you ALL for sharing. May 2013 bring you all that you need and desire.
My word just popped out of a poem that was being recited. It is “shimmer.”
I know I am late but like Macrina I too will change each month….my word I spoke out in December was kinder than kind, now as I make enter into this new year I will take for the month of January , OPEN HANDS. Just a few minutes ago I had been wanting to check on Macrina’s blog and came to find out Macrina’s is an open vessel to receive and give…now how is that a coincidence?
Suprise! I waited for my word. I longed for it even. I thought it had left me wondering the year without an anchor. I missed the deadline and the 11th hour. Then is the wee hours of the morning a whisper in my ear and with great enthusiasm… SUPRISE! What a word.
My word for the year is wholeness.
I have not yet read any of the words–and I look forward to contempating the words and the notes. My word is “journey”.
My word surfaced during last night whilst in the middle of a coughing fit! My word is ‘promise’ and I look forward to the commitment and potential of that word.
I came to your site just today after having not visited for a very long time. My word is MOVE…move my body, my self, move forward. I began a 12-week small group study at my church yesterday with your book The Artist’s Rule. So blessed to have found it at this perfect time. Loving Benedict’s words, “always we being again.” So, I am moving to begin again. Blessings to you, Christine, in all that 2013 holds for you. I will visit again soon!
