Give Me a Word 2013: Fourth annual Abbey giveaway

Share your Word for 2013

In ancient times, wise men and women fled out into the desert to find a place where they could be fully present to God and to their own inner struggles at work within them. The desert became a place to enter into the refiner’s fire and be stripped down to one’s holy essence. The desert was a threshold place where you emerged different than when you entered.

Many people followed these ammas and abbas, seeking their wisdom and guidance for a meaningful life. One tradition was to ask for a word –  this word or phrase would be something on which to ponder for many days, weeks, months, sometimes a whole lifetime. This practice is connected to lectio divina, where we approach the sacred texts with the same request – “give me a word” we ask – something to nourish me, challenge me, a word I can wrestle with and grow into.  The word which chooses us has the potential to transform us.

  • What is your word for the year ahead? A word which contains within it a seed of invitation to cross a new threshold in your life?

Share your word in the comments section by Tuesday, January 8th and you are automatically entered for the prize drawing (prizes listed below).

  1. The word that has been grabbing my attention is “Dazzling”. That is the only word that speaks to me at ths time to speak to the power of the gospel. Dazzled by the fact of God’s love and mercy in my life. It speaks to the power of the gospel and the personal, charismatic attraction of Jesus in my life.

  2. My word for the year is “imagine” so that I might allow myself to go beyond the mundane and into the unfathomable possibilities of God.

  3. My word is “receive”; being receptive to all gifts, messages, blessings, and grace offered throughout the coming year, and accepting them with joy.

  4. My word is “surprise”. Life is full of surprises, some good, some at first glance, not so good. I have been invited to see that when God is involved, and when isn’t God?, that even from the “unpleasant, or brutal” surprises will come forth something new, unexpected, and life giving.

  5. the still point…I am searching for balance, presence , learning to ” pause” ..living the Rule……..thanking you so much for making this computer a ” holy vessel” with your words.

  6. My word is Reverence. I am grateful for this word as an opportunity to grow in reverence for the Holy One, for creation, and for the relationships in my life – including with myself and with those who are most challenging.

  7. My word is discern wisdom. Be present and aware of daily wisdom that comes my way daily. What is it saying to me?

  8. My word is “gentleness” -with all beings, but especially to myself. I tend to beat myself up all the time.
