Give Me a Word 2013: Fourth annual Abbey giveaway

Share your Word for 2013

In ancient times, wise men and women fled out into the desert to find a place where they could be fully present to God and to their own inner struggles at work within them. The desert became a place to enter into the refiner’s fire and be stripped down to one’s holy essence. The desert was a threshold place where you emerged different than when you entered.

Many people followed these ammas and abbas, seeking their wisdom and guidance for a meaningful life. One tradition was to ask for a word –  this word or phrase would be something on which to ponder for many days, weeks, months, sometimes a whole lifetime. This practice is connected to lectio divina, where we approach the sacred texts with the same request – “give me a word” we ask – something to nourish me, challenge me, a word I can wrestle with and grow into.  The word which chooses us has the potential to transform us.

  • What is your word for the year ahead? A word which contains within it a seed of invitation to cross a new threshold in your life?

Share your word in the comments section by Tuesday, January 8th and you are automatically entered for the prize drawing (prizes listed below).

  1. My word is “trust”. I was pondering betv´ween trust and surrender, and today i gor a sms from a dear fried who wished me “trust and love”.

  2. The word came very softly and gently to me this morning as I prepared to step into the shower: “grace.” I was immediately filled with such gratitude in the experience of intimacy with Divine Love. The last few years have been so very difficult, with many changes (both letting go and embracing). I have felt almost alone as I’ve struggled to make sense of it all – and yet, Love continues to speak to the deepest needs of my heart. I embrace the new and hold softly the old.

  3. The word that came to me a week or so ago, was flourish, as in thrive, prosper, be in one’s prime, coming to me to combat a sense of stagnation, feeling stuck in inertia. So, am focused on that for this year, and probably beyond.

  4. I have two words. Peace & Love.
One word leads to the other,
    they are interconnected.
They make me feel connected to God,
    to others, and to myself.

  5. The word that chose me is Testimony. Calling from the deep, testimony beckons, testimony liberates, testimony invites me to speak from places I am only beginning to discover and trust deep inside. Thank you.

  6. My word came to me today when I was guest teaching. Students were creatively working on coil vases in a pottery class. My word is “engaged”. The more they were creatively engaged, the more meaningful the class. I want to try to be as engaged as they were in each sacred moment of 2013.

  7. “Viriditas” – I first heard this word in a course on Hildegard of Bingen and I liked it then. When I read it again in one of Christine’s posts it seemed to reach out to me. I’m eager to see where life will blossom and flourish this year.

  8. I have two words that are interconnected:
    Peace & Love
We all need both, and one brings about the other. These words help me feel connected to God, and to others, and to my self.

  9. My word for 2013 is ‘confidence’ which follows a phrase which I received in the spring, ‘Just Do It!’
I have changed careers from a legal secretary to a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and loving it. I love to teach and inspire others about holistic nutrition, but I carried a lot of fears. Over the past year the Lord has given me confidence and has spoken to me in many ways, that what I have been taught and my passion is valuable and my voice needs to be heard. So I am hanging onto that word, asking for scriptures and pictures and a color too, then Just Do It.
