CREATIVE EXPRESSION & CONTEMPLATIVE PRACTICE
Summer Art Retreat at Palisades Archdiocesan Retreat Center
in Federal Way, WA
Sunday, July 12 – Tuesday, July 14, 2009
with Christine Valters Paintner, PhD
Lectio divina (sacred reading) is an ancient Christian practice that allows us to enter into silence and let the depths of scripture speak to our hearts. Moving from silent prayer into various forms of creative expression can offer remarkable insights into the images stirring within. Participants will be guided in the practice of lectio divina and then in accessible art-making focused on the process and the journey of discovery. The retreat will focus on this rhythm of contemplation and creativity and the insights it offers us into the active movement of God in our lives. No previous experience with lectio divina or the arts is necessary.

ALL SAINT’S & SOUL’S RETREAT ON HONORING OUR ANCESTORS
with Betsey Beckman, MM and Christine Valters Paintner, PhD
October 29-November 1, 2009 at St. Andrew’s House on the Hood Canal
The Christian feasts of All Saints and All Souls honor the profound legacy of wisdom our ancestors have left to us. These feasts coincide with the Celtic feast of Samhain which marks the beginning of the dark half of the year and is a festival of the final harvest and remembering the dead. These moments on the great turning of the year’s wheel is believed to be a “thin place” where the ancestors are especially accessible to us.
Join us for three nights of retreat welcoming in the gifts of the dark time and honoring our ancestors through creativity and movement. Ritual, poetry, art-making, song, and dance will be our tools to grow in awareness of those who walked the earth before us and to listen for the wisdom they offer to our own life circumstances. We will explore the gift of our genetic and spiritual roots and celebrate the coming of the fruitful darkness when the seeds of new beginnings are planted. Gather with us to welcome in the presence of the Communion of Saints who support us in each moment. Together we will honor this very sacred time of year.
Program Cost: $675 includes 3 nights lodging and all meals. You are responsible for transportation to the retreat center. If you are flying in, we will connect you with others traveling from the airport.

BENEDICTINE SPIRITUAL PRACTICES:
Contemplative Ways of Being in the World
with Christine Valters Paintner, PhD
Online 7-Week Course through CDSP (Episcopal Seminary in Berkeley)
Fall: October 26 – December 20, 2009
There has been a dramatic rise in interest in Benedictine spirituality in recent years. It offers the contemporary world a set of ancient Christian practices which call us to contemplative ways of being in a world of doing, to live into rhythms rooted in the natural rise and fall of the day, and to greater presence to the holy moments of our lives. In this course we will explore, experience, and discuss three essential practices: lectio divina (sacred reading), centering prayer, and praying the Hours of the day. Each practice is a thread that weaves together with the others to create a tapestry in which we begin to see everything as sacred. _________________________________________________________
