How could I forget?

January 26, 2008 · by Christine

I was perusing Jan Richardson’s website yesterday and was reminded that she has her own hand-bound book of reflections for Lent called The Garden of Hollows: Entering the Mysteries of Lent and Easter.  I actually have a copy on my shelf which I ordered back before Advent so it is now sitting in my prayer space waiting for the season to open.  It has that beautiful handmade quality on nice paper, sewn signature, and includes 25 pages of Jan’s reflections and her evocative charcoal drawings to accompany them.  I love supporting independent artists and Jan’s work continues to be very meaningful to me, so I encourage you to head over and purchase a copy for yourself.

In addition, Suz reminded me in the comments of my last Abbey Bookshelf post of The Last Week: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus’s Final Days in Jerusalem by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan, which I read last year for Holy Week and found very meaningful.  I offered some insights from it here and here

great lucy, we’ll have to compare notes as I have not read through it yet myself. I am also contemplating my Lenten practice, lots of ideas swimming around my heart!

jan’s work looks wonderful…do i sound a little excited? i have been looking for some “funky” christian art and i am in love with her collage work. my finger is getting ready to order both a book and some notecards.

any other art ideas, christine and others? i am in the midst of planning two retreats and i am wanting to give christian art equal time…most is so dull to me. you had so many good images for our collages, christine.

Hi Suz, I think you will love Jan’s work. You are right though, there isn’t a lot of really good Christian art. I do like some of the contemporary icons at http://bridgebuilding.com/ and Ministry of the Arts at http://ministryofthearts.org/ has some nice things as well. Hope that helps. I get my collage images mostly from Spirituality & Health magazine and National Geographic.

thank you so much (one-handed typing here…a little carpal tunnel). Great sites. Interestingly, we have minimal real art but the best piece is a Lakota Jesus by Father John Guiliani. i simply love it. the halo radiates and his sweet little eyes follow you all around the room. i am so excited that i can get a whole lot of these inexpensively! he actually wrote us a letter when we bought us and sends us a christmas card. very sweet. he likes to know the people who buy his work. they are pretty on the site but this is dazzling in real life with tons of little individual seed beeds, which i love, of course!

    thank you thank you!
